The Ancient History and Culture Award is given to recently published books on ancient Japanese history and culture that are academically excellent and written in a way that is easy for the general reader to understand. The aim of the award is to further increase public interest in ancient history and culture through the awarding of books. The award is jointly run by five prefectures with deep ties to ancient history and culture: Shimane, Nara, Mie, Wakayama, and Miyazaki. The second award winners were selected on October 31, 2014. To commemorate this, a symposium entitled "The Mystery of the Birth of the Nation - The Light and Shadow of Ancient Izumo" was held on February 8, 2015 at Kunibiki Messe in Matsue City. At the symposium, after the grand prize winner for "Asuka Wooden Tablets - New Elucidation of Ancient History" Mr. Daiki Ichi (Associate Professor, Osaka University) gave a commemorative lecture, four people including Mr. Yasuhiro Terasaki (Professor, Nara University) who won the runner-up prize for "Telling Young People About the History of the Nara Period" and Mr. Takehiko Matsuki (Professor, National Museum of Japanese History) whose work "Unlooted Tombs and Emperor's Tombs" was selected as an outstanding work, held a discussion entitled "From Giant Tombs to Heijo-kyo. What about Izumo at that Time?!" The symposium has been recorded, so please take a look.
