Symphonic rebetiko - From Smyrna and the City to Piraeus ERT 2 29/09/2022 ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra 100 years since the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra, under the direction of its conductor Giorgos Aravidis, meets the refugee composers of rebetikou, in a musical journey from City and coast of Asia Minor in Piraeus with symphonic sound. The adaptation and editing was done by the musicologist and orchestrator Yiannis Belonis. After 1922, the refugee instrumentalists from Smyrna, Polis and other parts of the East and the Pontus with their taburados, santurovials, mandolins and lyres settled en masse in Piraeus, bringing with them their melodies, dances and their culture. They met the then fringes of the harbor bandits, creatively mixing their sound into a new music that changed the popular culture of our country. Symphonic Rebetiko is the first attempt at a symphonic treatment of Rebetiko faithful to the tradition. The Yellow Bicycles, Betty Harlautis and Spyros Kleissas give a new breath with respect to the original performances of favorite songs by Touda, Yovan Tsaus, Dalga, Peristeris, Papazoglou, Skarvelis, Bayandera, Roubani.
