Zurich, September 1, 1997: In the courtyard of the Fraumünster post office, more than 70 million francs are waiting to be transported to the National Bank. Five young men got wind of it from a post office employee. Thanks to good planning and cold-bloodedness, they manage the unthinkable: Within four minutes, they steal most of the money. The coup goes down in Swiss criminal history. Even the legendary post office robber Ronnie Biggs sends a congratulatory letter. But the joy is short-lived: all the thieves are caught. One of the first to be caught by the police was the leader of the gang: Elias Alabdullah. He is now in prison in Syria. In a telephone interview he recalls: "My idea was to go somewhere in Lebanon and do a good deal. Maybe a disco or something similar. But it didn't turn out that way." The then district postal director Rolf Hasler, the responsible district attorney Rolf Jäger, as well as postal workers and police officers involved talk in detail about the mail robbery of the century.
