The Schmeie, as it is called from Straßberg onwards, rises as the Schmiecha northwest of Albstadt-Onstmettingen at an altitude of 848 m just a few hundred metres south of the European watershed and flows into the Danube after 41 km near Inzigkofen. After a short train ride from Storzingen to Straßberg on the former border between Old Württemberg and the Principality of Hohenzollern, the hike takes you uphill on the Schmeientalweg to the imposing Straßberg Castle. Halfway up the eastern slope, the path follows the Schmeie further south and reaches the valley floor halfway to Storzingen. From there, the route continues in sections by car and on foot via Ober- and Unterschmeien to the mouth of the Danube.
