"I try to behave in such a way that the others here accept me as a German," says Ali F., who came to Germany with his family as a refugee from Lebanon over 18 years ago and has made it to the top: Today he is a teacher at a vocational college in Wuppertal, teaching economics and Islamic religion. He is popular with students, the teachers appreciate him, and a year ago he was made a civil servant. His career seems to be a model example of successful integration. "For me, being German means that I am fighting for the country here," he stresses. But Ali is also a devout Shiite Muslim. In his free time, he volunteers at a backyard mosque in Wuppertal, giving lectures there and seeking advice from Shiite imams when he comes into conflict with the values ​​of his faith in his everyday school life. If, for example, he has a problem teaching topics such as sexual diversity, he should invoke religious freedom, a clergyman advises him. In other words, he can reject the topic on this grounds. Ali also has close ties to the Blue Mosque in Hamburg. It has long been under surveillance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, is suspected of financing the terrorist organization Hezbollah and is considered an extension of the Iranian Ayatollah regime in Germany. In July 2024, it was closed and the Islamic Center Hamburg, which operates the mosque, was banned as a "major Iranian propaganda center in Europe." For over 4 years, we were allowed to accompany Ali with the camera, experienced him as a popular vocational school teacher, in arguments about political Islam with his father and as a devout Shiite who follows the teachings of the Iranian Ayatollah Khamenei. But the goal of these teachings is to export the Iranian revolution, to anchor anti-democratic, Sharia-oriented values ​​in our society. And so Ali is moving further and further away from the free democratic basic order to which he is committed as a German civil servant. A development that the director of his school does not notice.
