Jan Ullrich was one of the greatest German sports heroes - and has fallen as far as almost anyone else. The 49-year-old has publicly admitted for the first time that he used doping as a professional athlete and speaks in an interview with ARD doping expert Hajo Seppelt on Sportschau about the years in which he drowned his life crisis in alcohol and drug excesses: "I actually lost many years. I am already mourning that. It was a result of my personal mistakes, my personal weakness. [...] I was at the top, I was at the bottom and now the middle is the goal for me. You can also be happy with small things." It is a special constellation between the two interviewees. In 2006, the only German Tour de France winner was a guest on Reinhold Beckmann's talk show. Hajo Seppelt was also on the line at the time. Jan Ullrich avoided all questions about injections and pills and the lie he had built up throughout his life - 17 years later, he no longer does so. In this interview, Ullrich and Seppelt met again for the first time during a TV appearance - a few days after Ullrich's unequivocal but no longer surprising confession that he was a doping offender.
