(2) And sent against them birds in flocks (3) Striking them with stones of hard-baked clay. (4) And made them like straw (5) The overall meaning: Allah the Almighty opened this noble Surah addressing His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying to him: Have you not seen, O Muhammad, what your Lord did to the army of Abraha who accompanied the elephant to demolish the Kaaba? Did not Allah make their efforts to demolish the Kaaba misguidance and loss? And He sent upon them large groups of birds, one following the other, throwing stones of hard, dry clay at them; so Allah made them like a crop that the animals have eaten and devoured, so it has dried up and its parts have dispersed! Interpretation of the verses: Have you not seen what your Lord did with the companions of the elephant? (1) That is: Have you not seen, O Muhammad, what your Lord did with the army of Abraha the Abyssinian, the king of Yemen, who accompanied the elephant and headed to Mecca to demolish the Kaaba? On the authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “When Allah opened Mecca to His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, he stood among the people and praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: Allah has held back the elephant from Mecca and has given authority over it to His Messenger and the believers. It was not permissible for anyone before me, but it was made permissible for me for an hour of the day, and it will not be permissible for anyone after me.” Did He not make their plot lead to misguidance (2). That is, did Allah not make their efforts to demolish the Kaaba and divert the people from it lead to misguidance and loss? So their plot, which they had worked hard to achieve, was not accomplished. And He sent against them birds in flocks (3). That is, God sent against them many scattered groups of birds, one following the other, group after group, throwing stones of baked clay at them (4). That is, those birds threw stones of hard, dry clay at the owners of the elephant. So He made them like eaten straw (5). That is, God made them like a crop that the animals had eaten and devoured, so it dried up and its parts were scattered!
