Abdus Sattar Bhandari is a great character from Shelar Char in the Sundarbans. The person I am talking to now is Abdus Sattar Bhandari. His home is in Mongla. I got into a conversation with him during a trip to Shelar Char. It was quite a good conversation. He kept telling the story of his life in Shelar Char in the Sundarbans. In one of the various stories, he invited me for tea in his own kitchen. He made two cups of tea with many types of spices. He gave me one cup. He sipped the tea and expressed his anger about his low salary. What can he cook... he answered the question. He said that he can cook all kinds of food except sweets. The owner brought him to Shelar Char to cook and feed his fishermen. But he did not give him any helper. So, in anger, he stopped cooking and went to another babuchi to eat rice. Sattar Bhandari is about to be eighty years old. He smokes a lot of cigarettes. He spends most of his time wandering around the entire char. He gets a low salary and has no helpers for his work. Still, he comes to Shelar Char in the Sundarbans every year for his love of the ocean and nature.
