Four out of ten Swiss people are overweight. Excessive sugar consumption is one of the reasons for this. Sugar is in everything. Even where we don't think it's possible. A family of five from Aargau lived sugar-free for a month. With surprising findings. ???? Subscribe to SRF Dok on YouTube now ???? https://www.youtube.com/srfdok?sub_co... "Sugar is addictive because sugar activates the same receptors in the brain as other drugs," says Basel doctor Bettina Wölnerhanssen. That's why it's so difficult to take personal responsibility and reduce your own sugar consumption. We all love sweets. The Rechsteiner family from Döttingen, with three teenage children, is also not averse to the sweet temptation. However, the family now wants to find out what effect sugar consumption has on them and is embarking on an experiment: all five family members want to avoid foods with added sugar for a whole month. That's easier said than done. Because added sugar is hidden in four out of five foods. Even in those that don't taste particularly sweet. In Switzerland, one in six children is overweight. Half a million Swiss people suffer from diabetes. Many people are not sufficiently aware that they should avoid sugar for health reasons or only consume it in small quantities. A government-imposed sugar reduction is met with little acceptance: in 2019, the introduction of a sugar tax was rejected by the Federal Council. In England, on the other hand, the problem has been recognized and responded to. By introducing a hefty sugar tax, the sugar content in soft drinks has been massively reduced. Today, for example, an orange lemonade in London contains only half as much sugar as a lemonade of the same brand in Zurich or Geneva. The World Health Organization recommends that adults consume no more than 50 grams of sugar per day. For children, half that. In Switzerland, with twice the amount of sugar, we are alarmingly far from the WHO guidelines. Politicians put little pressure on food producers. It relies on the personal responsibility of consumers. The Rechsteiner family also found out how difficult that is.
