Zombies have moved from Haitian folklore to the silver screen and political propaganda. They are the mindless and emotionless dead, animated by black magic, personifying our fears of authority and the media. But the modern image of zombies as terrifying monsters with an insatiable appetite for human flesh is rooted in an unconscious racism that dates back to at least the late 18th century, when white Caribbean plantation owners were terrified that their black slaves would wake up and rise up. And then their white masters would have to answer for all their atrocities. The zombie legend was born of the terrifying world created by slavery and the white man's insatiable appetite for the most dangerous drug the New World began exporting to the Old: sugar.
