What happens when a loved one changes due to dementia? How do you deal with it properly as a grandchild, daughter or son? In Germany, around 1.8 million people live with dementia, and one in five people over 85 suffers from it. PULS reporter Leah Nlemibe spends two days visiting a day care center for people with dementia. There she meets Bernd Heise, who has been living with the disease for 9 years. During a visit to his home, he and his wife Hilde give Leah very private insights into their everyday life. And Leah visits Daniel and his grandmother Nana. Her dementia has now progressed so far that she no longer recognizes her grandson and is dependent on help. #PULSReportage #Reportage #Dementia #Alzheimer #Grandparents ---------- The most important sources can be found here: ➡ Here you can find all the information about the Malteser day care centers “Café MalTa” for people with dementia: https://www.malteser.de/cafe-malta-fu... ➡ The frequency of dementia; German Alzheimer Society https://www.deutsche-alzheimer.de/fil... ➡ Manifestations, causes and prevention; Federal Ministry of Health https://www.bundesgesundheitsminister... ➡ Communication and Alzheimer's dementia: 7 practical tips; Alzheimer Research Initiative eV https://www.alzheimer-forschung.de/de... ➡ Dementia: When forgetfulness becomes an illness; Federal Ministry of Education and Research https://www.gesundheitsforschung-bmbf.... ➡ Early dementia: When younger people develop dementia; Alzheimer Research Initiative eV https://www.alzheimer-forschung.de/de... ➡ Dementia prevention, intervention, and care: 2020 report of the Lancet Commission https://www.thelancet.com/article/S01... ---------- Chapter overview: 00:00 Dementia: What does it mean and how do I deal with it? 01:33 Leah visits a day care center for people with dementia 03:01 Diagnosis of dementia: What happens to your own memories? 05:24 Advanced dementia: Leah meets Daniel and his grandmother 08:35 Daniel's grandmother no longer recognizes him 11:06 2nd day of dementia care: Singing performances & indoor gymnastics 12:25 How the dementia diagnosis changed Bernd's life 14:32 Bernd goes jogging alone: How does it work? 15:51 Bernd's wife Hilde speaks openly about the problems in everyday life 17:17 Examination by a neurologist: Has Bernd's memory deteriorated? 19:51 Leah's conclusion ---------- Editors: Lukas Hellbrügge, Sonja Röbig Camera: Lukas Hellbrügge Editing: Lukas Hellbrügge Graphics: Felix Holderer, Daniel Egger, Lukas Brenninger, Solvey Handrick Post-production: Xenia Leidig, Karolina Ottmers Thumbnail photo: Lukas Hellbrügge Community management: Amir Khalifa, Šejla Begović ---------- We are Ariane Alter, Kevin Ebert and Leah Nlemibe from PULS Reportage.
