The family is not hiring any additional help in the belief that the three of them can handle the work. But then the unexpectedly good ski touring conditions lure many people into the mountains and onto the hut's terrace. Caroline Beyer, 57, runs the Mittlenberg Hut in Valais alone. She loves the solitude at 2395 m above sea level, but also appreciates the company of her guests. On the second day, the simple hut is already more than half full with ten ski tourers. The work of a hostess here is arduous: melting and carrying water and emptying the toilet are part of every day. Chiara Tscherrig's parents took over the Wasenalp mountain inn 26 years ago. The young woman now wants to find out whether she wants to follow in their footsteps. The trustee actually likes a structured and plannable everyday life, but here in the mountain inn she never knows whether there will be just a few guests or several groups for dinner.
