A newsletter from me and the Fنجان team, for the podcast's close audience. https://thmanyah.link/fb1966 In this episode, we host the writer and researcher on Sudanese affairs, Ghassan Ali Othman. The discussion revolved around Sudan's problems and the reasons that stand between the Sudanese and the stability of their country, through a historical, social and analytical narrative of the Sudanese situation. Our guest spoke about the eternal question of Sudanese identity: "Are we Arabs or Africans?" He believes that this question is an unconscious question, and tries to answer it and refute the origin of the question by moving away from the dichotomy of Arabs and Africans. Our guest says that stability is a condition for economic growth, but this stability has not been achieved for reasons including the infiltration of parties into the army. In a clear statement, our guest exonerates the military establishment from coups, as according to his description, it does not act on its own. Rather, the political parties were the ones who intervened and asked the army to carry out a military coup in service of the parties' goals. Ghassan Ali Osman also touched on the secession of South Sudan from the north, and its consequences, which were not good for the south. The south was supposed to revive its economy due to its oil potential, but none of this happened. In fact, he confirms that there is no state in South Sudan at all. Our guest also talked about the fact that the solution does not lie in a political leader with a charismatic personality who leads Sudan to the end of the dark tunnel, as this type of political solution has worn out. The only solution is institutional change and all parties sitting at a table to answer questions that have long troubled the Sudanese people, such as economic marginalization, identity, and the most appropriate political system of government for the Sudanese. Our guest concluded the discussion by saying that what is currently happening in Sudan is the labor of a coming stage. It is true that the longer the labor, the longer the pain, but this labor must end and the suffering must give birth to a new stage, which may be good and peaceful for Sudan and its people.
