The minuend is 300. The subtrahend is 281. What is the difference? Let's run the algorithm to find out. The numbers are already in the correct position: one above the other, taking care that digits of the same order are in the same column. For example, here we have the units column. Here, the tens column. And here the hundreds column. Everything organized, let's get started. In the units column, where there are 0 units, we do not remove 1 unit. In the tens column, where there are 0 tens, we do not remove 8 tens. To solve this problem, we look at this 3. What does it mean? It means, according to its position, 3 hundreds. Remember that each hundred is worth 10 tens. So, we take away a hundred from here, that is, there are only 2 hundreds left. The hundred we took away is worth 10 tens, so we add 10 to the tens column. To solve the problem in units, we take away one of these 10 tens and leave only 9 tens in the tens column. The ten we took away is worth 10 units, which we put in the units column. It's as if we wrote the number 300 as 200 and 90 and 10 just for a moment, just to do the subtraction. It's as if we had exchanged 3 100 real bills for 2 100 real bills, 9 10 real bills and 10 1 real coins. We still have the 300 real, but we have written it in another way, a more convenient way to do the math. So let's go! Now it's easy. In the units, we have: 10-1=9 In the tens, we have: 9-8=1 In the hundreds, we have: 2-2=0 I don't even need to write this 0, because it's to the left of the number. Have you ever heard the expression "this guy is a zero to the left"? Well, it means that that person has no value, is despicable. We don't need to write this 0 to the left to say that the difference is worth 19. So, 300-281=19. In order to put the happy face that means you really got it right, you might want to check the result. To check, add the subtrahend with the difference and the result should be equal to the minuend, if it isn't, the minus is wrong. To our joy, 281+19 is indeed equal to 300.
