Johanna is 21 years old and is in her third semester of studying forestry in Tharandt, which is part of the TU Dresden. She is currently taking part in the research project “Climate change in historical gardens” as a student assistant. This is particularly exciting for her because she wants to go into research herself later and is therefore particularly motivated to do everything right. So far, her main task has been to prepare samples for laboratory tests. But that is about to change: for the first time, she is allowed to go out into the Great Garden, the largest and one of the oldest parks in Dresden. Help against the effects of climate change is desperately needed in the extensive park area. A tree dies here every day. To find out what can be done about it, researchers are taking leaf and soil samples on site to examine the current conditions for the plants and what measures can be taken to improve them in the future. This is where Johanna comes in. Armed with a so-called root borer, she goes to take her first own sample at one of the locations in the park to be examined. She is supervised by her professor Dr. Karl-Heinz Feger and technical employee Georg Richter, who will make sure that she does everything right. Because getting the heavy device into the ground is not that easy and requires a good portion of strength and skill. Johanna not only has to find the right way to use the root drill, but also carry out initial tests on the sample she has taken from the soil, in the field and later in the laboratory. #Forestry #ClimateChange #ForestDieback #alphaUni More about the course content.
