Title: Study the occupation and use of mangroves on the right bank of the Subaé River in the municipality of Santo Amaro - Bahia Student: Micael Gidi de Carvalho Advisor: Dária Maria Cordeiro Cardoso Abstract: The municipality of Santo Amaro, Bahia, is located in the Recôncavo Baiano, on the banks of the Subaé River and bathed to the south by the Baía de Todos-os-Santos. It was initially founded as a village in 1557, and was elevated to the category of city in 1837. The cultivation of sugar cane and the formation of sugar mills are some of the most remarkable historical facts of the municipality, in addition to the participation in revolutionary movements such as the fight for Brazilian independence in Bahia. (IBGE, 1958). This project is aimed at studying the occupation and use of mangroves on the right bank of the Subaé River in the municipality of Santo Amaro - Bahia, based on the analysis of satellite images and the conceptualization of the mangrove swamp. According to Schaeffer-Novelli (1995), coastal regions are home to a transitional environment between terrestrial and marine environments, characterized by the coastal ecosystem, and within this ecosystem are mangrove areas. They are present in tropical and subtropical regions, subject to the tidal regime, with species adapted to salinity fluctuations and characterized by colonizing predominantly silty sediments with low oxygen levels. According to Coutinho (2016), mangroves are called Atlantic Dense Evergreen Mangrove Forest (halo-biome), occupying tidal flats, being dense evergreen tropical forests, strongly influenced by the tides, distributed throughout all coastal regions with a tropical pluvial (equatorial), hot and humid climate, in the world. However, due to coastal and warm sea currents, they can reach extratropical latitudes. In Brazil, mangrove areas extend from the state of Santa Catarina to Amapá. Mangrove areas have high ecological and socioeconomic value, with several riverside communities that are highly dependent on the resources provided by the mangroves. However, tropical coastal regions, in addition to the effects of natural phenomena, have suffered from human activity, which has affected the quality of the mangroves. One of these human actions is the expansion of buildings in the urban centers of the municipality of Santo Amaro - BA, which has affected the natural resources of the municipality, such as the suppression of vegetation cover, causing erosion and silting of the Subaé River, restricting navigation and water quality. And since some of these urban centers arise close to the mangrove areas, this area has been degrading. With this, the study area was delimited to be compared with satellite images, making it possible to understand how much the occupation of the right bank of the Subaé River has suppressed the mangrove vegetation. The 1965 Forest Code (Law 4,771) defined mangroves as Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs). Law No. 12,651/2012 established that mangroves, along their entire length, and restingas, as mangrove stabilizers, are considered Permanent Preservation Areas. Mangrove areas are of extreme socioeconomic importance to the population living on the banks of the Subaé River, such as the residents of the communities of Caeeira, São Brás and Acupe, who make their living from fishing and shellfish gathering. According to Martins and Souto (2006), in addition to having fundamental ecological functions, mangroves are important for the survival of these populations who live off the resources of this ecosystem, such as the community of Acupe, where fishing and shellfish gathering are the main sources of food and income for most of the inhabitants. #UFBACongress2024 #Mangroves #Subaé River #Santo Amaro - BA #UFBA
