About :

Strasbourg: a city steeped in history on the border with Germany and, with its many European institutions, the capital of Europe alongside Brussels. To discover this diverse city, it is a good idea to use the tramways. They are considered a prime example of the renaissance of trams in Europe since the 1990s. (A documentary from May 2019) When the tramway was opened in 1994, the city took this as an opportunity to redesign the traffic system. Large areas of the city center were made car-free, while the trams roll through the heart of the city. The tram is operated by the "compagnie des transports strasbourgeois" (CTS for short). Its futuristic-looking low-floor cars resemble a high-speed train more than a tram and quickly became a tourist attraction. Today, six lines run on a route of around 57 kilometers. Lines A and D as well as B, C and F each have common sections and all intersect at the central Homme de Fer station. The newest route is the extension of line D to the neighboring German town of Kehl, which opened in summer 2017. Numerous commuters, tourists and strollers cross the Rhine every day and contribute to the European flair of the metropolis. The bridge on which the tramways cross the Rhine was built especially for tram traffic north of the existing Europa Bridge. In Kehl we make a detour to the Rhine port there. Huge amounts of loading and unloading take place on the European waterway in the small town of Kehl. The port railway helps with this - the administration itself has a small Henschel locomotive, otherwise diesel locomotives help with container transport on the huge site. Back in Strasbourg: Around 1.4 kilometers of the tramways run underground and pass under the main train station, the Gare Centrale. The French SNCF train station also tells a lot about the history of the city. It was opened in 1883, as part of the German Empire, to which Alsace had fallen after the war of 1870/71. The architecture tells a lot about German-French history. But the station is also ultra-modern; since 2007, a glass facade has adorned the front of the building and provides more space in the reception area. Here in the main station, too, you can see Strasbourg's central location in Europe, as connections go from here in all directions and across the borders to neighboring countries. We broadcast this episode of Ildico Wille with the number 967 for the first time on May 24, 2019 under the title: Strasbourg, borderless rail traffic. #eisenbahn-romantik #swr All statements and facts correspond to the status at the time and have not been updated since then.
