If you have a problem with the midline of your chest between your pecs, you need to know how to fix that flat inner chest. You may know it as the inner chest or mid-chest, but the line between the two pecs is often a problem for many people. In this video, I'm going to talk about this problem and what you can do to make your chest look bigger and better. The midline of your chest that divides your pecs is something that can make a chest look big or small, depending on the size of the space between the pecs. The main problem people often have with this part is that there is too much separation, which makes the pecs look further away from each other and therefore smaller. So how do you fix a flat inner chest? It starts with your genetics. First and foremost, there is a finger test you can do to determine the distance between your pecs based on their insertions on the sternum. Simply run your index finger up and down the line between your inner pecs. You will be able to feel where the muscle fibers attach to the sternum, along with any gaps or short attachments where the pec doesn't quite reach the midsection. The closer the pec's attachment is to the sternum, the less wide the space between the pecs will appear. Unfortunately, when it comes to genetics, you can't change the muscle attachments. Genetics also play a role in the presence of potential sternum deformities. A crooked or sunken sternum, such as in the case of pectus excavatum, will give the inner chest a less than ideal appearance. If you've seen Scott Steiner's chest, you might worry that this is your fate. Don't worry, the appearance of Steiner's pecs is likely due to nerve damage resulting from his wrestling career. If you have a problem with the midsection of your chest, your diet and nutrition can play a role in improving it. A smaller chest with lower levels of body fat will look better than a large chest covered in body fat. Why? Lower levels of body fat increase the appearance of muscularity. This means that with the right level of leanness, your chest could look bigger and better. The appearance of a bigger, more muscular chest will help make the separation of the inner chest look much better. Finally, fixing this problem requires training your chest and knowing how to do it properly. Basic chest exercises are great for building a bigger chest; these include the barbell bench press, dumbbell bench press, weighted dips, and weighted push-ups, just to name a few. While basic exercises are good for progressive overload and gaining strength… they do have their limitations. These chest exercises are limited when it comes to one main function of the chest: adduction of the arms. Being able to bring your arm closer to the midline of the inner chest will help activate more muscle fibers and train it in its full function. An example of an exercise that trains the chest through adduction is a simple cable crossover. When it comes to chest training, it's not just what exercises you choose that matter, but how you do them, especially if you have a problem with that inner part. There are also the non-expandable muscle fibers in the chest. The more you contract your pecs, especially through adduction, the more these fibers will be activated. If you can get these non-expandable muscle fibers to contract as well, you'll have a stronger chest contraction. Remember, focusing on trying to work that inner chest line is unnecessary. If you follow these simple principles and do them with this approach to your chest training, you'll have a better looking chest that will distract attention from the middle chest line.
