First of all, many Italians still see the difference between the North and the South of the country as very pronounced. So much so that the inhabitants of the North sometimes call (with a negative connotation) those of the South terroni, which derives from the vision of the South as a backward land where people lived mainly from agriculture and land cultivation. The inhabitants of the South, in turn, call those of the North polentoni, since polenta in the past was the staple food of the diet of people who lived in the North. Having made this introductory division, let's see how Italians see other Italians, city by city. 1 – MILAN Let's start with one of the best-known Italian cities, Milan. Let's say that this one doesn't have a good reputation in the rest of Italy: Milanese people are often seen as cold, always in a hurry and arrogant. However, there are also some positive stereotypes about them, for example the fact that they are people of their word: if they promise or say something, they will do it. 2 – ROME Let's move on to the beautiful Italian capital, Rome. In general, Italians don't have strong stereotypes about Romans, but Romans do have stereotypes among themselves, in particular, the difference between the "pariolini" of North Rome and the "bori" of South Rome is felt, especially among young people. In short, it is said that the pariolini are richer and show off their wealth with expensive clothes, cars and accessories, as well as being a bit arrogant. The bori, on the other hand, wear less expensive brands, are forced to use public transport and often speak in Roman dialect. 3 – BOLOGNA As for Bologna, it is often given three nicknames: the Learned, the Fat, the Red. From these nicknames you can deduce the stereotypes associated with the Bolognese: they are cultured people (Bologna is home to the oldest university in the Western world, dating back to 1088); they eat very well (tortellini, tigelle, mortadella, ragù, piadina, to name a few); they are communists (red is the color generally associated with the Communist Party). 4 – VENETO Let's move on to Veneto, understood as a region. Normally the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Veneto is alcohol (Prosecco and Spritz, to name a few). In the rest of Italy, consequently, it is said that the Venetians are drunkards and alcoholics. Yet be careful: according to data from the Ministry of Health, the Venetians are not in first place as "drinkers" in Italy, this primacy belongs to the inhabitants of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto-Adige. It is also said that the Venetians swear a lot, that is, they use curse words and swear words that concern divinities and other religious aspects. Many Venetians, in fact, have the tendency to use curse words in the middle of the sentence, as a way of interjecting, without the intention of offending. It is also common to hear that Venetians are racist, due to the fact that the Lega, a far-right political party, was born in Veneto. 5 – NAPLES Let's move on to Naples, perhaps the city that is most often the subject of jokes and many clichés. The stereotype that is heard most often is that Naples is full of thieves who rob you at every corner, but the truth is that something like this can happen in any big city, a little caution is always necessary. Not surprisingly, in the 2020 World Crime Index, the city was even ranked safer than Rome... ...
