Specialist Dr. Dicle Çelik from Memorial Şişli Hospital, Department of Child Health and Diseases, provided information about what to consider when switching to complementary foods in children. The most important factor for growth and development in infancy and childhood is nutrition. Nutritional habits also begin to be acquired at a very young age. Feeding our babies with breast milk for the first 6 months is an important element for the development process to take place in a healthy way. After the 6th month, the period of gradually getting used to complementary foods begins. This period is an important period. Because our babies may have difficulty adapting during the transition from milk to solid foods. We call the first 6 months breast milk. While our breast milk rate is 70 percent between 6 and 8 months, our complementary food rate is 30 percent. After the 8th-9th month, this rate becomes 60 percent breast milk, 40 percent complementary food. After the age of 1, our rate changes to 50 percent breast milk, 50 percent complementary food. In order not to discourage breast milk during this process, we can only recommend giving two tea glasses of complementary food, especially during the first 6-8 months of adaptation. If you ask what to start the complementary feeding period with, we find it more appropriate to start with vegetables and grains. Because sometimes when children start complementary feeding with fruit, they get used to the taste of fruit and then their tolerance for vegetables and grains can be difficult. A platform called Baby Led Weaning, which has become popular in recent years, has been on the agenda. We recommend and prefer this type of nutrition more. In other words, in this type of nutrition, the child is fed by holding the foods placed in front of him/her with his/her fingers in the way he/she wants. He/she decides what to eat and how much to eat. We recommend using seasonal vegetables and fruits as much as possible. There are foods that we should not give to our babies in the first year of life. These foods are egg white, honey, sugar, fruits that may cause allergies such as orange, tangerine, strawberry and we do not recommend some vegetables such as eggplant and broad beans. There are some tropical fruits that have become popular recently. These fruits such as avocado, kiwi, pineapple can also cause allergies. Of course, vegetables and fruits should be consumed in accordance with their seasons. We usually recommend giving our children vegetable puree around 13:30-14:00 when they start. The base of our puree should be potatoes and carrots, and bulgur, semolina or rice should be added. These foods should be organic. After boiling these foods together, they should be strained through a wire strainer and given in a slightly watery consistency. First of all, as they get used to vegetable purees, a new seasonal vegetable should be added to the puree every 3 or 4 days. This amount should also be adjusted in moderation. Because sometimes too many vegetables are added to the puree and it is not possible for children to distinguish their tastes at that time. Therefore, purees should be enriched by combining vegetables that are compatible with each other in terms of taste. Extra virgin olive oil should be added to vegetable purees both in terms of adding flavor and calories, and because the additional food we give to our children can cause constipation in the intestinal system. Depending on the child's tolerance, the additional food that starts as half a tea glass can be increased to a tea glass. Another thing our mothers wonder is whether we should give our children meat broth or bone broth during the complementary feeding period. As pediatricians, we do not recommend meat broth or bone broth very much. For us, it is much healthier to have the meat itself. In other words, a well-ground, large walnut-sized lamb mince or a piece of meat can be in vegetable purees every day. When it comes to meat, you can blend it after boiling it, since the child's chewing skills are not very developed yet. You can put it in vegetable puree after blending it. However, as your child grows and develops his/her chewing skills, you can add the meat in small pieces to vegetable puree. In fact, if his/her holding, grasping and grasping senses develop, you can put small pieces in front of him/her and let him/her consume it in bites. The period between 6 and 8 months is the period of getting used to complementary feeding. We should not force our children during this period. Because our children are infants during this period. If there is breast milk, if there is no breast milk, we benefit from follow-on milk. The period of getting used to complementary feeding should be as follows: Our babies should have breast milk or follow-on milk when they wake up in the morning. We recommend a meal of fruit puree around 10:30-11:00, a meal of vegetable puree around 13:30-14:00, and yogurt around 16:00-17:00. It is not neces
