Stefan Batory (September 27, 1533, Şimleu Silvaniei – December 12, 1586, Grodno) – King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (from 1576), son of Stephen IV, Voivode of Transylvania. In 1579–1582, he took part in the Livonian War (1558–1583) and, through skillful maneuvering, achieved a series of victories over the troops of the Russian Tsardom, nullifying all of Ivan the Terrible’s conquests in Livonia. Cavalry units from Batory’s army occupied Smolensk and Chernigov. But after the unsuccessful siege of Pskov, the king concluded a truce with the Russian Tsardom...
