D2 is a tool stamp steel that has become legendary in the knife world due to its incredible wear resistance and aggressive cutting. There are not many knife manufacturers who would ignore it - D2 is very good at work. It is worth thinking about: D2 was developed during the Great Patriotic War, but it has not lost its relevance to this day. Today, D2 is used for knives of the middle and high price segments, as it demonstrates a truly outstanding cut and very long retention of the sharpness of the cutting edge. 10-12% chromium provides D2 steel with a certain corrosion resistance, but it cannot be called absolutely stainless. In knife enthusiasts, it is called semi-stainless steel. In practice, rust stains or small dark spots can appear on the blade after contact with acids if the knife is not washed and wiped, or if it is in a humid environment for a long time. Usually, after use, it is enough to wipe the knife dry and lubricate the blade every two months. The hardness of D2 products can vary from 57 to 64 HRC, for knives we consider the optimal hardness to be 60-62 HRC. It has excellent wear resistance, but at this hardness we also maintain maximum plasticity, because the blade should not be brittle. D2 is quite demanding of the sharpening tool. The high carbon content gives it excellent working properties, but also makes it a tough nut for the sharpener. The issue is resolved with high-quality abrasive: good whetstones with diamond chips, ceramics, water stones, high-quality modern artificial stones - and the sharpening problem is removed by itself. As we can see, D2 knives require a thoughtful approach: it is important to take care of the blade and remember that D2 does not like impact loads. But you immediately forgive the knife all this as soon as you start cutting. A sharply honed blade made of D2 steel simply does not notice obstacles: it easily penetrates any products, bites into wood very aggressively, and most importantly, does not lose its razor sharpness for a very long time. You want to cut and cut and cut with such a knife... Popularity has its price. The D2 marking is often put on Chinese knives, clones of famous brands. At the same time, the blade, at best, has a Chinese analogue, and at worst, a completely incomprehensible alloy. That is why knives made of D2 should be bought only in trusted stores and from trusted manufacturers. This steel reveals itself perfectly in small and medium fixed knives, as well as in folding knives. We recommend D2 to those who value a clear aggressive cut and sharpness retention in a knife above all else.
