There are still many narrow-gauge railways in Saxony, some even in daily local transport and many are steam-powered. These nostalgic travel offers and much more on the subject of steam and railways are brought together under one roof: the STEAM RAILWAY ROUTE Saxony. The state is divided into four regions. This film presents some excursion and travel destinations in the Leipzig and Dresden regions. The Döllnitzbahn runs between Oschatz and Kemmlitz or Glossen. The operational center is Mügeln. The Mügeln train station geoportal has an exhibition about kaolin. The rock of volcanic origin is a raw material for the production of ceramics and porcelain. On the northern outskirts of Leipzig there is a park railway that is mainly operated by children and young people. The circular route leads around the Auensee, a former gravel pit. Material from here was also used to build Leipzig Central Station. And once again it is about raw materials. The Meuselwitz coal railway, south of Leipzig, documents the history of technology. The mine railway used to transport brown coal from the surrounding opencast mines to the briquette factories. In the Dresden area, there are two narrow-gauge railways that run daily with steam: the Lößnitzgrundbahn and the Weißeritztalbahn. The former goes to Radeburg via Moritzburg, known for the baroque Moritzburg Castle. The trains start in Radebeul Ost, also known as Karl May's last place of residence. In the museum of the same name, in addition to originally furnished work rooms, an extensive collection on the history of the indigenous population of North America is on display. The Weißeritztalbahn runs through the deeply cut Rabenauer Grund along the Rote Weißeritz. Seifersdorf station has been restored to its original condition. The Weißeritztalbahn interest group is responsible for its preservation. The Dresden Transport Museum shows the history of the four modes of transport: rail, road, water and air. The exhibits document the technical and historical background of the locomotives and carriages still in operation on the STEAM RAILWAY ROUTE. Many routes of the once extensive network of Saxon narrow-gauge railways have been closed down and demolished. Some have been rebuilt. And a small association has been driving the reconstruction of the Schwarzbachbahn for over 20 years. Every year the navigable section is made a little longer and a bridge is renovated every now and then. Once a year a guest steam locomotive of the IVK type runs and pulls the already originally restored passenger carriages over the slightly more than 1 km long route.
