After the church committee of the Bremen Evangelical Church opened disciplinary proceedings against Pastor Olaf Latzel, a statement from the board of the St. Martini parish was read out on Sunday, May 17, 2020, after the service in the St. Martini Church in Bremen. In it, the board clearly supports Pastor Olaf Latzel and his preaching. The statement takes a stand on the controversy surrounding the opposing assessment of practiced homosexuality, but also on the preaching of law and gospel, of eternal damnation and salvation of the sinner through grace alone. It describes the situation, unique in the German Protestant churches, that the Bremen Evangelical Church does not have a common confession, but according to its constitution guarantees all parishes freedom of belief, conscience and teaching. The diversity, indeed contradiction, of the Bremen parishes is described in a pointed manner.
