The Immobilizer system, which first appeared in Brazil in the FIAT line in the mid-1990s, has the function of preventing the engine from starting, thus helping to prevent vehicle theft. The system's main part is the ignition key, as it has a chip/transponder with an electronic password in common with the engine control unit and the immobilizer system. If a key with a different password is inserted, the system will not allow the engine to start.
