In the Kozan district of Adana, Law Professor Mustafa Topaloğlu and his doctor son Nahit Topaloğlu produce 30 tons of avocado in a year on their ancestral land. The father and son, who planted 200 avocado saplings on 25 acres of land for trial purposes, started producing 90 thousand saplings on 65 acres in a short time. The father and son quickly reached a point where they could export by producing 30 tons of avocado annually. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Topaloğlu said, “For us, the garden is a return to the roots. I am the child of a farming family. We wanted to have a longing for the soil and a different occupation. We have a 250-acre garden, 65 acres of which is avocado and the other half is citrus. My son and my wife and I thought about what we could do as an alternative agriculture. We started with avocado production on 25 acres. When we first started, we had difficulty with the quality of the saplings and seedlings, so we decided to produce it ourselves. We started with 200 saplings and reached 90 thousand saplings. There was a process that we saw and examined on our neighbor's 7 acres of land in Alanya. Our goal is to be able to export abroad,” he said. Father Topaloğlu also emphasized that there is a misconception in the region and said, “There is a misconception that avocado cannot be grown in the Adana region. But it can be grown even in the Black Sea region. Avocado grows as long as the temperatures are not too low. Avocado grows very efficiently not only in Alanya but also in Çukurova.” Dr. Nahit Topaloğlu, who led his father in production, said, “I am a doctor, but I wanted to produce in my ancestral lands. We wanted to lead the way in our region with avocado. Avocado is a food with many benefits. It is one of the most beneficial foods for children and adults, as it contains antioxidants, lowers bad cholesterol, and increases good cholesterol. The climate here is very suitable for production.
