It portrays basic human emotions in such a simple way that it resonates with you again and again. I don't think there's any other movie that is so serious about human nature. All of the basic human virtues and vices are depicted in this movie. But what I found particularly impressive was the depiction of basic human decency, something that I feel Hollywood has completely forgotten. Ringo's (John Wayne) behavior towards Dallas (Claire Trevor), especially when the other passengers shun her, assuming she's a prostitute, reminds us of the basic human decency we should respect. He is kind to her not just because he wants to be kind, but because she is kind to others. She wins Ringo's respect by her good deeds, just like Mary Magdalene won the respect of Jesus. The visuals in this movie are truly astonishing. It's like a painting that has been painstakingly crafted from start to finish. Everything about this movie is so good, it's no wonder Orson Welles watched it 40 times while preparing Citizen Kane. The cinematography is so beautiful, and the scenery in Monument Valley is always spectacular. The music is so good, and the story is simple but always engaging. The script is well written, and the characters are all so fascinating. Plus, the big chase scene is one of the best action scenes in the history of cinema. As the story progresses, the true nature of the characters is revealed. John Ford's direction is brilliant, and the actors' performances are superb. John Wayne gives one of the best performances of his career, and John Carradine is also impressive. But it's Thomas Mitchell who really stands out.
