The unique stilt houses and the possibility of driving onto the beach by car have made St. Peter-Ording famous and popular. There is a hint of California, but only until 10 p.m. SPO has five beach entrances, two of which can be accessed by car. The Ording beach section in the north is always busy. The beach is huge and small and large sporting events take place regularly. The Bad beach section is completely different. Here a long pier leads over the salt marshes to the beach, where most of the typical stilt houses are located. The first stilt house was built in 1911. South of St. Peter-Ording village is the Böhl beach access. This beach, which borders the national park, is the quietest. You can also drive here. The shore path takes you past the Böhler lighthouse. The light of the setting sun gives the tower a very special charm. For anyone interested in the region and its history, the Eiderstedt Landscape Museum is a real highlight. The museum is housed in a historic brick building that is well worth seeing and shows the cultural history of the region. The churches of St. Nicolaus and St. Peter are also worth a visit. They are built on mounds and have withstood the elements for centuries. They look plain from the outside, but they house important historical works of art. In Wesselburen, not far from St. Peter-Ording, there is a Hebbel Museum. It commemorates the famous citizen Friedrich Hebbel, who was born there in 1813. He was a controversial journalist, poet and, above all, dramatist. His texts influenced Franz Kafka and the prize named after him is awarded every year to outstanding artists from northern Germany. On the way to Wesselburen you will pass the Eider Barrage. The structure is not particularly beautiful and has a massive impact on the ecology of the Eider. But it protects life. It was built with great effort after the devastating storm surge of 1962, which was remembered above all for the devastation in Hamburg and the crisis management of Helmut Schmidt. You can find these and many other highlights and information, active tips, maps and links in the St. Peter-Ording spot collection. Have fun discovering!
