There is no one who has had as great an influence on the Church as St. Francis of Assisi. That is why he is also called the 'Second Christ'. Born in 1182 in Assisi as the son of a wealthy family that was a timber merchant, Francis heard the voice of God and chose to give up wealth and fame and live as a poor person. He lived his entire life as a pilgrim following the footsteps of Jesus Christ in a gospel lifestyle, along with many brothers who were attracted to his life. The saint showed the 'poverty of Christ' through his life in a society that was secularized and moving away from religious interest. Many people lived a life of repentance through the saint's sermons. The saint was an excellent mystic who contemplated the mystery of God hidden in concrete daily life. The saint, who aspired to become like Christ all his life, received the stigmata on Mount La Vedra in 1224, two years before his death. In 1226, he felt a premonition of death and, wanting to face death in the most impoverished manner, he lay naked on a pile of ashes and sang the psalms as he died.
