The Cold War was in full swing, when the United States launched several secret experimental programs related to special aircraft in the second half of the 50s and early 60s. Some were stopped relatively quickly, and some were reconsidered. Engineers worked hard on designs for fighter jets, scouts, and stealth aircraft. One of these was the Archangel, the A-12, which Lockheed began building on behalf of the CIA in the late 50s. A fast, efficient structure was needed that could carry out reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Union. The A-12 was then used to create the Blackbird, which served for nearly 30 years.
