There are few peoples in the Balkans today who, like the Serbs, have such a well-preserved and well-established history that testifies to the continuity of centuries-old statehood, history, culture and art. Serbian rulers left behind numerous temples in the Balkans that have testified to the existence of the Serbian people in that area for more than a millennium. Serbian kings built two types of temples: one with which they wanted to reach the sky and the other with which they wanted to bring the sky closer to the earth. The Historical Museum of Serbia preserves numerous material traces that testify to the history and culture of the Serbian people. Their collections contain around 45,000 exhibits from different eras, including medieval manuscripts and books, documents, royal seals and weapons, collections of money, jewelry and art objects. A special collection consists of the insignia of Serbian rulers. The splendor, luxury and wealth distinguished Serbian medieval rulers, who, with their crowns, scepters and robes, decorated with gold, precious stones, diamonds, wire and gold embroidery, would not have been ashamed even before the richest European courts of that time. A special place in the Historical Museum of Serbia is occupied by objects that belonged to two ruling dynasties, the Karađorđevićs and the Obrenovićs, starting from the founders of these dynasties, through the kings and all the way to the princes and princesses from these ruling families. All of this will make up the permanent, future exhibition of the Historical Museum of Serbia, which should soon be opened in the building of the former main railway station in Belgrade. This exhibition will allow visitors to travel through time and read the history, culture and art of the Serbian people through the centuries through the exhibits on display.
