Hard disk drive (HDD) defragmentation Defragmentation or "defragmentation" is a process used to optimize the performance of traditional hard disk drives (HDD). In these types of disks, data is stored piecemeal in different parts of the disk. Over time, when files are deleted or updated, empty spaces are created between different sectors and the data is scattered in different places, which is called "scattering". This fragmentation causes the mechanical head of the disk to spend more time to read a file, thus slowing down the system. Defragmenting puts these scattered files back together seamlessly so that the hard drive can access the data more quickly. This process can help increase efficiency and reduce data access time. TRIM in SSDs Unlike HDDs, solid state drives (SSDs) do not have moving parts and data is stored in flash memory cells. The process of writing and erasing is different in SSDs, and TRIM is a special command that helps to optimize and extend the life of SSD. When data is deleted from an SSD, the corresponding memory cells are not completely erased, but only marked as "unusable". Without trim, when the SSD needs to write new data to these cells, it must first erase them and then store the new data, which slows it down. With the TRIM command, the operating system informs the SSD which parts of the memory no longer need the current data and can be erased. This helps the SSD to perform write processes faster and avoids erosion and reduced memory life. Comparison of Defragment and Trim Mechanism and Purpose: Defragmenting is used to improve access to scattered data on HDD, while trimming helps to optimize writes on SSD. Need to run: Defragmentation is recommended for HDDs, but SSDs do not need defragmentation due to their different structure, and defragmentation on them can even reduce their life. Importance of speed and longevity: Trimming increases the speed and longevity of SSDs, while defragmenting helps speed up HDDs. ???? How to know the end of SSD life?
