This Clinical Session is linked to the Master in Clinical Speech Therapy. Approach to Neurological Damage in Adults and Neurodevelopment in Children. https://www.isep.es/curso/master-en-l... Within the framework of the Master in Clinical Speech Therapy in Neurological Damage and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, a clinical session will be held focused on speech therapy intervention for two pathologies related to reading: dyslexia and alexia. Although these two disorders share similar clinical manifestations, such as difficulties in decoding and understanding written text, their causes are fundamentally different. Dyslexia is a learning disorder of neurobiological origin, characterized by persistent difficulties in the acquisition and automation of reading, which usually manifests itself from childhood. On the other hand, alexia, also known as "verbal blindness", is an acquired disorder that appears after a brain injury (such as a stroke or trauma) in people who previously had normal reading skills. During the session, speech therapy intervention strategies for each of these conditions will be addressed, analyzing the cognitive and linguistic processes involved in reading, such as word recognition, phonological decoding, the visual and phonological route, among others. The importance of an accurate differential diagnosis will be discussed, since the therapeutic approach varies considerably depending on whether it is a developmental disorder (dyslexia) or an acquired loss of reading ability (alexia).
