We are changing our planet. The loss of habitat, the consequences of global warming, hunting and poaching as well as the increasing agricultural use of the land are putting animals and insects under pressure. Around 150 species disappear every day. We are currently experiencing the greatest mass extinction since the end of the dinosaurs. Dirk Steffens visited researchers who are fighting for species protection around the world. Around two million animal and plant species have been scientifically described, but the World Council for the Conservation of Nature estimates that there are at least eight million. One million species are currently threatened with extinction, and countless others have not yet been discovered. This raises the question: where should species protection begin? What is the priority? Which animal species do we want to save - and which ones do we have to save, in our own interest? Dirk Steffens shows what we lose when species disappear, and what we have to do to ensure that nature's finely tuned network does not develop holes that can no longer be repaired. He investigates which species occupy key positions in this network and what we can actually know about the value of individual species. This video is a ZDF production. Subscribe?
