José das Dores Fernandes, known as Zé Mulato, was born on August 12, 1949, and João Monteiro da Costa Neto, known as Cassiano, was born on April 19, 1955. Both are from Passabém, a city located in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, near Itabira. Sons of a Protestant leader from Passabém, the brothers Zé Mulato and Cassiano acquired their musical knowledge by watching and listening to what was happening around them during their childhood. At the age of 12, Zé Mulato began playing on his own, borrowing guitars from parties in Passabém. The boy only settled down when he got a guitar from the “Rei dos Violões” brand. The two went to Brasília in 1969. In 1972, Zé Venâncio and Saulino had been hired to perform in a public square, on the occasion of the inauguration of a pharmacy in the satellite city of Ceilândia, in the Federal District, and, at the beginning of the show, two friendly and quite uninhibited young men from Minas Gerais appeared among those “candangos”. The two young men from Minas Gerais, who were unknown until then, opened the party and were applauded by the audience. That was the beginning of the duo’s artistic career. Six years later, Carreirinho was enchanted by the similarity observed in the performance of Zé Mulato & Cassiano with the duo Zé Carreiro and Carreirinho. He took the two to the capital of São Paulo and, at that moment, “Recordando Zé Carreiro e Carreirinho” was born, the duo’s first album. With a repertoire by Zé Carreiro and Carreirinho, produced by Carreirinho himself, the album was released by the Chororó label. The duo spent several years looking for a record label. After 1982, when the LP “Louco Amor” was released by Tocantins, the duo only recorded a new album in 1997, “Meu Céu”, by the Velas label, which was awarded the 1998 Sharp Prize. Between these two releases, the two artists participated in the compilation “Ao Capitão Furtado – Marvada Viola”, released on LP in 1986 and remastered on CD in 1997. However, they did not give in to the commercial interests that so cripple the artist's creativity. Combining the romanticism of Zé Carreiro and Carreirinho, the guitar playing of Tião Carreiro and Pardinho and the good humor of the unforgettable satires of the late duos Alvarenga and Ranchinho and Jararaca and Ratinho, Zé Mulato and Cassiano form the “three in one” duo. Zé Mulato is also a poet who manages to express the yearnings, feelings, joys, sorrows and truths of the rural world, of the country folk. Zé Mulato's poetry explores both the simplest and most profound themes, linked to the reflection of the complex human existence. This makes the artist one of the greatest active composers of traditional country music. In early 2004, on the occasion of the 4th Encontro de Folias de Reis in the Federal District, the CD “25 Anos” was released by the production company VBS – Viola Brasileira Show, at a time when the duo also celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the release of their first album. In the second half of 2005, the duo's 10th album was released, entitled “Dias Melhores”, with 17 previously unreleased compositions. In 2009, VBS released a triple album to celebrate the 30-year career of the two artists, consisting of a CD with sung songs, all previously unreleased (“Sertão Ainda é Sertão”), as well as an instrumental CD with the duo playing viola and acoustic guitar (“Zé Mulato e Cassiano – Instrumental”) and a DVD-Documentary of the duo’s 30-year career (“Documentário - 30 Anos”). In 2013, “Ciência Matuta”, the duo’s most recent work, was released. The duo Zé Mulato & Cassiano continues to be fully active, performing shows throughout Brazil.
