It is a long peninsula of 50 km in the shape of a fan, bordered on one side by the Gironde estuary, on the other by the Atlantic Ocean. Renowned for its vineyards and its endless beaches of fine sand, the Médoc has nevertheless long remained a "little corner of the world", a difficult, demanding territory, marked by the omnipresence of water. Here we find 2 of the largest lakes in Aquitaine: Lacanau and Carcans Hourtin. It is on the latter that we begin our Médoc escapades, in the company of Olivier Milcent, base manager of the CVB, Cercle de Voile Bordeaux Carcans Maubuisson. The immensity of this lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in France, has made it a particularly popular body of water for champions. The French 470 team comes here to train for the next Olympic Games. The club is not only known for its sporting dimension. Labeled "sport for all", the CVB has invested to allow people with disabilities to practice sailing. For Michel Espaignet, director of the club, this social dimension is essential. It is at the ponds of Langouarde that we then meet Marc Vignau, heritage curator. He tells us about the very difficult living conditions that for centuries, the "people of the marshes" have known in these Médoc moors. For centuries, the marshes have never ceased to be unhealthy, dangerous spaces for men, which had to be made to disappear at all costs. To the point that we ended up forgetting that they had their use... The protection of wetlands has now become an environmental priority. François Sargos, curator of the Cousseau Nature Reserve explains to us all the "benefits" that these areas have to offer us. Sylvain Bouffers is a local boy. He was born and raised on the banks of Lake Lacanau. We follow him on an unusual early morning paddle board ride on the Canal des Etangs, created at the end of the 19th century to drain the marshes and connect the large lakes to the Arcachon Basin. Finally, we set off to explore the riches of Lake Lacanau in the company of photographer Thierry Magliulo.
