Soule, which marks the border with Béarn, is the smallest and least populated of the three French Basque provinces. And it is undoubtedly the wildest, especially in its mountainous part. In Soule, traditional dance is a living popular art, massively practiced by young people. In 2015, Johaňe Etxebest created Kautere Balet with a guiding principle: staying true to the roots while infusing modernity. It is impossible to come to Soule without making a detour to Mauléon Licharre, THE capital of the French espadrille. From the end of the 19th century, the city experienced great prosperity thanks to the famous canvas sandal with braided soles. From the 1980s, foreign competition invaded the markets with low-cost products. Today, out of 12 million pairs of espadrilles sold each year in France, nine are imported from Asian countries. Those who resist have chosen to focus on quality and innovation. This is the case of Mathieu Labat and Julien Maisonnave, founders of the Art of Soule brand.
