Head for one of the treasures of the Aquitaine coastline, the Basque Corniche! 8 kilometers of cliffs by the sea, untouched by any recent construction. This protected territory of 360 hectares is the pride of the three municipalities that watch over it: Ciboure, Urrugne and Hendaye. Labourd, one of the three French provinces of the Basque Country, is the one that borders the Ocean. It is home to the large maritime cities, such as Ciboure located at the northern end of the Basque Corniche. Built at the mouth of the Nivelle, the city has long remained in the shadow of its famous neighbor, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, but its history is also fascinating. It is Amandine Guindet, facilitator of architecture and heritage, who serves as Raphaëlle's guide through the city. The incredible architectural wealth of Ciboure reminds us that the sea has allowed the Basque Country to write a large part of its history. At the other end of the Basque Corniche, you should not miss the incredible Château d'Abbadia, built at the end of the 19th century. Céline Davadan tells us the story of this extravagant mansion that we owe to an extraordinary character, Antoine d'Abbadie. Born in 1810 to a Basque father and an Irish mother, Antoine d'Abbadie had an incredible life. A scientist and explorer, he spent 11 years in Ethiopia searching for the sources of the Nile. He became a reference in astronomy and was elected president of the Academy of Sciences. In 1896, Antoine d'Abbadie bequeathed his castle and part of his estate to the Academy of Sciences, on the condition that these spaces be preserved. If today the Basque Corniche is a preserved site, it is partly thanks to this visionary. And he is lucky! Because these few kilometers not only offer majestic landscapes but they are also incredibly rich. Thanks to Pascal Clerc, director of the CPIE Littoral basque, Raphaëlle will discover an inestimable geological heritage. An exceptional natural heritage that the State via the Conservatoire du Littoral and the municipalities have committed to protecting. Our trip on the Corniche basque ends where we started, in Ciboure. Raphaëlle embarks on a Hawaiian pirogue with Jérôme Casenave for a fishing trip for squid.
