About :

Somló, lonely witness hill on the edge of the Bakony At the western foot of the Bakony mountains, 6 km from Devecser, on the plain of the Kisalföld, the uniquely beautiful bell hill of Somló rises to 435 meters. Its name is an ancient Hungarian name, it comes from the old days when there were still many dogwoods covering the top and sides of the mountain, which is now planted with grapes. In terms of area, it is our smallest historical wine region, whose high-quality white wine already gained a great reputation in the Middle Ages as an area declared protected in 1993. Millions of years ago, violent volcanic eruptions created the basalt material that became the perfect breeding ground for wine with a pleasant acidity, strawberry aroma, and fine flavor. Its most typical varieties: furmint, sheep tail, sárfehér, Italian and Rhine Riesling, Tramini, Ezerjó. Folk memory also attributed the birth of a boy to wine, so it was also consumed at royal weddings and wedding nights in order to hope for a male heir, which is why it is called the wine of wedding nights. The healing effect of Somla wine is also confirmed by medical observations, according to a folk rhyme from 1845: Among the plant rarities of the mountain, you can most often find the mountain syrti, the protected yellow stone rose, the primrose, the variegated lady's petal, and the black bird quince. It is rich in ferns: in addition to the bladder fern, the stone and northern, and the sweet curlew, the well-known forest shield is also common. You can also find wild onion, meadow star flower and transdanubian rose here. Its animal world also preserves a number of species that are rare from a nature conservation point of view. The open middle surfaces and stone walls are mainly the territories of lizards, the most interesting of them being the pannonian lizard. Its bird life is extremely rich, many earwigs, ravens and blackbirds nest in its trees and bushes. Sights of the Somló mountain: The Taposókút is located two-thirds of the way up the mountain in the yard of an old press house, and in those days it brought water up from a depth of about 80-100 m. It cannot be operated at the moment. On the Vásárhely side of the hill, there is the Saint Margaret's Chapel, which was probably built in the time of King Matthias. It was destroyed during the Turkish wars and rebuilt in 1727. There is a statue of Saint Donat nearby, and behind it there is a small chapel. On the Doba side stands the St. Márton chapel, which is also mentioned in 1309 as the estate of the Vásárhely nuns. It probably served as the castle's chapel. The Refuge and Lookout Tower, inaugurated on July 12, 1931, was built on the highest point of the mountain. From the 7-meter-high tower, hikers can still see a breathtaking view: the Bakony mountains to the east, Badacsony, Csobánc, Szentgyörgy-hegy, Szigliget to the south, Sághegy to the west, the reaches of the Alps in the distance, and the towns of Kisalföld and Pápa to the north. The Szent István statue and cross were completed in the years after the regime change. The castle rises towards the sky on the northern side of Somló hill, overlooking Doba. It was probably built after the Tatar invasion. It was already indicated on Master Lázár's map in 1528. Its heyday can be traced back to the time of Tamás Bakócz, who in 1495, as bishop of Eger, bought it together with his brothers for 12,000 golden forints. He fixed it and rebuilt it. It was in Turkish hands between 1563-66, and was last restored in 1707 by Bottyán Vak. After the Rákóczi War of Independence, the strategic importance of the castle ceased. The area of the castle ruins was cleared by the Veszprém County Tourist Office in the summer of 1954, and in the summer of 1962 the dangerous wall parts were reinforced by the National Monuments Inspectorate. Wine region Somló Juffark wine is born from the perfect combination of the grape variety and the place of production. The unique specialty of Somló in the whole world can best be shown by the sheep's tail; and vice versa: the characteristics of the lamb's tail are best displayed in the Somló. The result is a multi-faceted wine that is inimitable in every style, from light to full-bodied, with a complex, mineral flavor. The castle ruins of Somló are located next to Doba, on the northern side of the basalt Somló hill, in a dense forest. The castle used to be difficult to access; in front of the south side is an eight-meter dry ditch, ending in a ravine at one end and the mountain at the other. The floor plan of the castle is irregular, with internal towers and several courtyards. An intact drawbridge leads across the chasm, which leads into an alley, which now leads to the forecourt. This area is bordered on the west by the guard's vaulted accommodation, and its southern and eastern walls are lined with stone crevices. From the forecourt, you can reach the inner courtyard via a drawbridge and an equally narrow alley. The
