The soil of the Brazilian semiarid region, due to constant droughts, the predominance of shallow soils and sparse vegetation cover, is at risk of desertification. The threatened area corresponds to almost one million square kilometers - the equivalent of more than half of the Northeast Region and also the north of Minas Gerais. These characteristics make the soil of the region more vulnerable to the degradation process, combined with the misuse of the soil in agricultural areas.
