Think back to your time at #primary school. Who was in your class? Were they the kids from the neighborhood? Actually, our #school system in Germany works like this: You go to the school that is closest to where you live. Primary school in particular was always intended to be a place where all children learn together, regardless of their family background. In other words, social mixing is like the wet dream of educational researchers. But now something is happening more and more often that is already causing social #segregation in primary school: Many parents do not want to simply send their child to the primary school assigned to them. They are looking for the "best school." And because it is often not so easy to choose your own "dream school" from the public ones, many say to themselves: then private school. This phenomenon is increasingly occurring in large cities, but also more and more often in rural areas. In the video you can see a mother from Berlin-Neukölln who is struggling with the primary school in her neighbourhood, you get an insight into this very school and also see a father who sends his children there. We asked the education researcher Marcel Helbig from the University of Erfurt what the consequences are when more and more parents send their children to private schools. And then of course we also want to know from education policy whether it is simply standing by and watching a social problem. We spoke to Oliver Kaczmarek, the SPD's education policy spokesman in the Bundestag, about this. In this Team UPWARD video we are showing excerpts from the report "The best school for my child?", which our reporter Laura Kingston produced together with her colleague Nico Schmolke for the rbb. In this report you can delve even deeper into the thoughts of the mother who is struggling so much with which primary school her child should go to.
