Sobral is a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of Ceará, located between two large capitals, Fortaleza, about 230 km away, the 5th largest capital in the country, and Teresina, the capital of Piauí, located 360 km away. The city became internationally known for having been the site of proof of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, after a group of scientists observed the solar eclipse of May 29, 1919. The urban site of Sobral was listed as a cultural heritage site of Brazil by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage in 1999.
