Sobral is a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of Ceará, located between two large capitals, Fortaleza, about 230 km away, the 5th largest capital in the country, and Teresina, the capital of Piauí, located 360 km away. With a population of 203,023 inhabitants, according to an estimate by the IBGE in 2022, it is the fifth most populated municipality in the state and the second largest in the interior. With an urbanization rate of 88.35%. Sobral is the second most developed municipality in the state of Ceará, behind only Fortaleza, according to the HDI (Human Development Index). Sobral is also the leader in workers with a formal contract in the interior of Ceará and has the fourth largest ICMS collection in the state, behind Fortaleza, Maracanaú and Caucaia, in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza. The municipality also stands out in exports, being the only municipality in the interior that competes with the Capital for leadership in the state's exports. The city of Sobral is considered a regional capital according to the IBGE. It is also the largest university center and the largest health center in the interior of Ceará. According to the List of Brazilian municipalities by IDEB, it has the best basic education in Brazil. Sobral's climate is typically tropical, hot and dry, with an average temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius and an altitude of 70 meters, reaching up to 120 meters in the highest areas of the city. Sobral is located 235 kilometers from Fortaleza, which is also connected by a railroad, currently used mainly by the Votorantim Group. Road access is via BR-222, which connects Ceará to Piauí and, consequently, to Maranhão and Pará. The city became internationally known for having been the site of proof of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, after a group of scientists observed the solar eclipse of May 29, 1919. The urban site of Sobral was listed as a cultural heritage site of Brazil by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage in 1999.
