Smolny Cathedral is not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the tallest historical buildings in St. Petersburg. Its height reaches 97 meters. Its bell tower offers a gorgeous view of the surrounding area. Many residents and visitors to the city have been inside the cathedral, but few have been in its huge basements, which amaze not only with the height of the ceiling, but also with the size of the stone blocks from which the walls are built. Granite blocks can be called megaliths without a twinge of conscience. Why did the builders of the cathedral use such non-standard-sized materials for stonework?
