For all those who had discovered the new slowness of travel, a swaying steel hotel traveled from Berlin to Paris every evening in the winter of 2004: the night train NZ 242. Three men who had already traveled all over Europe in the Mitropa days made sure that the guests got in and out of bed. When they started work at 7:30 p.m., the sleeping car conductors began a 14-hour battle against modern sleeping car technology: stubborn folding tables, service ladders and microwaves, rocking carriages, tipping over breakfast trays and against tiredness.
