Bitsch, specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery from the GERMAN JOINT CENTER at the ATOS Clinic in Heidelberg, explains what a sled prosthesis is, when it can be implanted and what advantages and disadvantages are associated with it. This is a special small, half-side knee prosthesis (also called a partial prosthesis or unicondylar joint replacement) for the partial replacement of only one sliding roller on the inside (medial) or outside (lateral) of the knee. Only the joint sections that are actually affected by arthrosis are replaced and the majority of the knee joint, such as the other sliding roller, the kneecap and the knee ligaments, are retained.
