MELODIC INTERVAL OF THIRDS The interval of three degrees between two notes of the musical scale is called a third. There are different types of thirds: diminished: they occur when there is a tone of distance between the two notes. Diminished thirds have the same tonal length as major seconds. minor: they occur when there is a tone and a semitone of distance between the two notes. Minor thirds have the same tonal length as augmented seconds. Major: they occur when there are two tones of distance between the two notes. Major thirds have the same tonal length as diminished fourths. Augmented: they occur when there are two tones and a semitone of distance between the two notes. Augmented thirds have the same tonal length as perfect fourths.
