???? In this video: Video, picture and calls of the great egret Name: Great egret Family: Herons The great egret is a regular winter guest here, but not in summer, as it does not breed in Germany! The great egret has been a regular migratory and winter guest in Germany for several decades. In Central Europe, it regularly breeds on Lake Neusiedl and, since 1992, in the Netherlands. Characteristic features/appearance: Elegant build, snow-white plumage, very long neck, strong yellow beak, which is black at least at the tip of the beak during mating season. In addition, it has long, radiant shoulder feathers in its breeding plumage. The toes and lower part of the legs are dark. Size: 85-100 cm Weight: 700-1700 g Age: 20 years and older Females: The female is lighter and slightly smaller than the male, and its plumage is also snow-white. Song/calls: Not particularly vocal. Croaking calls such as "krha" or "krroo" can be heard, mostly at the breeding site within the colony. Breeding season: April - July, 1 annual brood, 25-26 day breeding period Nest: Nest made of reeds lies within a colony in the reeds on the banks of inland waters. Clutch size: 3-6 eggs Food: Fish, amphibians, aquatic insects, but also small mammals on land such as mice or reptiles and land insects. Habitat: Shallow waters such as lakes and ponds. Natural enemies: Sea eagle, eagle owl and hawk. Migratory behavior: Resident bird and short-distance migrant. Endangered: Not endangered in its breeding area.
