The volume "Silesian Uprisings. Politics, history, memory", edited by prof. dr hab. Michał Kopczyński and dr Bartosz Kuświk, presents essays by twelve outstanding researchers dealing with the history of Silesia. Together they create a broad panorama of the history of Silesia from the Middle Ages to the turbulent 20th century. In these areas, Polishness was reborn not after a hundred years of partitions, but after more than five centuries of functioning outside the borders of the Polish state. The meeting will be devoted to, among other things, the specificity of this region resulting from its history, as well as an analysis of the fact that the Silesian Uprisings were - like the Greater Poland Uprising - an independence uprising that brought tangible effects. The debate will be attended by: prof. dr hab. Michał Kopczyński (Museum of Polish History), dr hab. Cecylia Leszczyńska (University of Warsaw), and, as a moderator, dr Mikołaj Mirowski. "In this book, we decided to go beyond the textbook narrative – to reach much further into the past of Silesia and go beyond the year 1921," emphasizes prof. dr hab. Michał Kopczyński, scientific editor of the collection of studies commemorating the return of Upper Silesia to Poland. Individual chapters of the book "Silesian Uprisings. Politics, history, memory" bring readers closer to more detailed issues, including the situation in Silesia on the eve of World War I, the course of the uprisings, the political position of Silesia in independent Poland and the functioning of the memory of the Silesian Uprisings in literature and art. As noted by Robert Kostro, director of the Polish History Museum, the Silesian Uprisings and the Silesian experience of the fight for independence are still underestimated in the context of the entire fight for independence: "The three Silesian Uprisings require consideration of both the specificity of the region in which Polishness was reborn not after a hundred years of partitions, but after more than five centuries of functioning outside the borders of Polish statehood. It is worth taking a closer look at this phenomenon not only because of the interesting regional customs or the Silesian godka, but also because of the fascinating, dignified, working-class, and at the same time conservative Silesian ethos". The book was published in the Year of the Silesian Uprisings by the Polish History Museum and the Silesian Institute in Opole on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the plebiscite and the Third Silesian Uprising.
