Excerpts taken from the book “Amrut Laya”, by Siddharameshwar Maharaj. Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj (1888 - 1936) was one of the greatest unknown saints of his time. A disciple of Sri Bhausaheb Maharaj and the promoter of his tradition “Inchagiri Sampradaya”, Maharaj had the intuition that he should go beyond meditation, which he called “the path of the ant” (because it is slow and tortuous), and thus developed the “path of the bird”, a quick and practical means by which it is possible to reach the truth through thought. Maharaj became known for being the guru of Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ranjit Maharaj and other great teachers. Atma Vidya (Self-knowledge) is the central theme of his teachings. According to him: “Self-knowledge is Knowledge about your Being. Once we recognize who we really are, we can see what is permanent and what is transitory. Then follows the renunciation of the impermanent and the acceptance of the permanent. Because of the transient nature of things, the fear of dissolution is inevitable.” “All pride must disappear. As long as the ideas ‘I am the body, my wealth, my son, I am a person of status, my wife, my relatives, etc.’ exist, there can be no real Knowledge.” Siddharameshwar Maharaj. “People who accumulate millions and then tell others about the ‘Knowledge of Brahman’ do themselves no good. Instead, they commit fraud. They do not know the meaning of detachment.” Siddharameshwar Maharaj. “One who has not overcome the habit of making distinctions does not derive real benefit from the Vedas and various other scriptures. One should carefully consider to what extent one has succeeded in giving up pride and restraining body-consciousness. You cannot acquire the Supreme Truth unless you give up the habit of differentiating.” Siddharameshwar Maharaj.
