The Shiva Purana is a sacred text of Hinduism in Sanskrit, one of the eighteen main Puranas (called "Mahapuranas"). According to the Vayaviya Samhita, the Shiva Purana was originally called the Shaiva Purana and consisted of 12 samhitas and 1 million shlokas. Then the great sage Vyasa shortened the text to 24,000 shlokas and passed on the Shiva Purana to his disciple Romaharshana (Lomaharshana).
